Comments:The documentation effort for Tech_nicks was concentrated into developing software and gathering content for "catreader". Catreader is a bespoke piece of software for recording the content of tech_nicks workshops in multimedia form (text, still image, audio and video). It aimed to create quick turnaround, edited packages that would convey key information and a flavour of the personalities involved in a way that does not require people to be on-line for long periods of time (such as requried by accessing streaming media) would provide users with tools required to make their own archive of information that they could select.
The Catreader software was developed by Safetycat inc (
www.safetycat.org), part funded through the grant for Tech_nicks, and part funded with an additional grant from the ACE Collaborative Arts Department. The additional money was crucial in getting the software to a useable stage of development.
At time of writing there are 12 workshops currently downloadable from the net that represent finished packages. There are roughly 12 more in production. The one-day turnaround was ambitious and was achievable in London where the software developers were available to help with the uploading of material. A report on the success and limitations of Catreader will be available in Autumn 200 as well as some new uploads and a CD-ROM of the entire archive.
