here's the 'more detailed' update lisa mentioned regarding tech_2_leeds....
this is a draft outline and i welcome input/feedback from others on
this list - so bear with me as this is long !
some background
the pavilion run a 30 hour (open college network) accredited training
programme called 'switched on' which are introductory courses in
multimedia techniques at the archway centre. to join any of
the free courses in web design, digital audio & video, digital animation,
photography and vjing& djing you have to be aged between
16 - 25 years and living in one of the target areas of burnantofts,
chapeltown and harehills. archway also host drop-in sessions which
are for centre users outside of the accredited course.
a research trip was made by myself and lisa a couple of weeks ago to
the pavilion & archway centre where we met with the centre users,
switched on/drop_in sessions co-ordinator sam bainbridge, sally hoyle
centre director and nicola hutchinson artistic director at the pavilion.
there are four tutors for the various drop-in sessions and switched_on
programme.

archway connections
the users of archway that we met are very active in and have connections
with the following community based initiatives:
black child
a perfomance group covering rhyme/poetry/song covering topics
to do with everyday life. its performers/writers are aged 10 upwards
and the group originated in chapletown but has groups in the beeston and
burley areas. membership of black child extends beyond leeds with members
coming from other parts of uk esp.north east england. the group have taken
part in workshops and live performances at virgin megastore, borders books.
the last bpm newspaper and live event for the group r was called
'dextrous' held at leeds central librabry on 2nd june - which i attended
with nicola hutchinson.

breakers unify
formed in 1997 by dancer & hip hoppers shaun clarke and shane to
address in response to resurgent interest in old skool breakdancing and
demand after a local festival - hyde park unity day. shaun and shane
then started teaching breakdancing workshops in schools and community
venues and through these aim to challenge the portrayal of break beat culture
in the media, train and advise young people in the terms of safe practice,
document the history of streetculture including grafitti/street art, dejaying/turntabalism,
music production through writing/song workshops.they are one of the
main organisers behind 'millenium moves' a series of breakdance battles
based in the north for young breakdance crews.
breakers unify dancers took part in the 'dextrous' event on 2nd june
at leeds centreal librabry.

project proposal
one of the aims of the tech_2_leeds project will
be to build-on, enhance and support the newmedia work being produced
for the switched-on programme and work not solely connected with
it but by users of the drop-in sessions at the archway.
so the project would consist of 6 days of workshops in mid-sept incorporating skills covered by the switched-on programme, new ones identified by archway centre drop-in users & supporting staff the content from these workshops would be shown at a day long event on 20th october at leeds central library which would be a seminar in the afternoon followed by a live event in the evening.
another aim of the project will be to bring in artists, musicans, writers, theorists from other parts of the uk/europe/us/latin america/caribbean/ and drawing on anyone still around in europe from sarai/cat/spinach/riseup.net after bristol_tech_2 event at the cube in august either for the workshops or if they are still available for the october activity
seminar/live event: saturday 20th october
location:leeds central library
proposed title: black_presence_in.....
the seminar and live event take place during what is in the uk black history month and during september there is the highway africa 2001 conference which takes place 9-14th sept at rhodes university in south africa which is expected to cater for 350 participants from africa and beyond. participants have included: practioners, trainers, researchers in africas new media as well as journalists, teachers, publishers, broadcasters, academics etc....
the title for the seminar although not fixed is not meant to exclude people outside of the black or ethnic minorites but is intended to focus on the contributions made by people from these communities on different areas of society and culture so as a black practioner i have a keen interest as do seminars like the highway africa and the recent 'race in digital space' held in april of this year at MIT, massachusetts, usa in hearing about the effects of cyberspace on racial politics and identity. and 'black_presence_in....' you can fill in the gap with whatever it is applicable to technology/arts/science/dance
here are some suggested topics/themes for both the workshop & seminar:
race in cyberspace
hacktivism/activism
access and representation on the web
connectivity
immigration
net radio
music websites
digital grafitti projects - wap phones
live event: time tba
black child
breakersunify
nightmaresonwax
others - tbc
i'm currently compiling a list of related sites for the above - and this should go both on the general tech_2 mailing list and tech_2_leeds list by the end of this week.
it would be good to have suggestions on 'black_presence_in....' which covers the work of indegenous people in australia, us, cananda - maybe those connected with sarai/spinach/rise.up/cat/imc can give me a hand in compiling interesting initiatives around identity and additional themes to those in the above list......especially the court victory by south africa regarding generic aids drugs/countries on the us list 301/brazil importing cheap aids drugs and the indian generics company cipla
workshop dates: 17th september - 22nd september
venue: archway centre & others tba
based on the initial visit and others to be arranged to archway/pavilion
and other related community groups over the next month a workshop

animation for the web

digital photography
desktop publishing
